2,612 space, 10-level precast pre-stressed concrete parking structure
Walker Parking Consultants was initially contacted by Heinlein Schrock Architecture to provide structural and functional design services for a parking structure for the new Allied Insurance corporate headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. The four bay, ten level, precast structure provides 2,612 parking spaces angled at 90o for employees, visitors and public parking for both Allied Insurance and the adjacent hotel, Fort Des Moines. The parking structure functions as two-double threaded helixes. Levels 3 through 10 are gated for employees only. Dedicated hotel parking is provided on the grade level. The office building was designed for future expansion to the north so the parking structure was designed with two stair/elevator tower cores along the north. A pedestrian bridge is provided at the third level of the east tower and the structure is designed for a future bridge connection between the two towers. The elevator and stair towers are open at all levels except the roof. There is a bridge connection to the office building to the north, across Walnut Street and two direct connections along the east facade to the hotel. The central plant for the office building is housed within the parking structure footprint and the piping connection to the office building runs within the pedestrian bridge. There are three cooling towers supported on the parking structure roof and a drain down tank for the cooling towers located on Level 8.
