Fredericksburg, Virginia
296 space 4-level precast concrete parking structure
Architectural elements, multiple rooflines, over-sized window openings, over-sized brick, and protruding and recessed walls along each elevation combine to help reduce the visual mass of the Wolfe & Sophia Street Parking Garage.
The visibility and negative architectural impact of ramping was minimized by locating one half of the ramp on the alley side of the structure. The visibility of the ramp on the Sophia Street elevation is minimized by stepping down the façade, smaller window openings, decorative shutters, and decorative grillwork in the window openings.
The design, by Wisnewski Blair & Associates, Ltd., utilizes historically accurate design elements and materials that allow the structure to blend with the downtown area.
Specific care was taken to maximize the historical architectural details on the Sophia and Wolfe Street façades, where the garage will overlook future city public features, such as the planned Riverwalk and future city development. The exterior bearing wall system is integral to the desired exterior look of the facility and accommodates a large module with no column projections into the parking module, making the most of the limited footprint of the garage. The garage employs end bays which are 44’-0” and allow for comfortable vehicular turning movements and end bay parking.
