University of California, Berkeley
1,000 space 4-level cast-in-place concrete underground parking structure
The Underhill Parking Facility and Field Replacement project at the University of California Berkeley includes the construction of a parking facility with a recreational sports field on the upper (roof) level at the Underhill site which is located two blocks south of the main Berkeley campus, bounded by College Avenue, Channing Way, Haste Street and the recently completed Central Dining and Office Facility Building on Bowditch Street in Berkeley, CA.
The structure is designed using a precast column and beam frame with cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete slabs and shear walls of approximately 248,200 square feet, with a 77,400 square foot playing field on top. The field level includes a multi-sport artificial turf field and running track. The two lowest levels of parking are entirely below grade, requiring mechanical ventilation, enhanced lighting, graphics and other patron amenities appropriate to subterranean parking. A perimeter and underslab drainage system is included to intercept groundwater at the subgrade levels.
